This small quilt features an on-point Cathedral Window in the center, framing a vintage Society Silk doily. The doily is embroidered in gold on fine linen and is outlined with hand-sewn beaded piping that defines and frames the window within a field of richly detailed free-motion quilting.
The surrounding cinnamon-brown cotton sateen background is quilted as a sampler of intricate motifs, allowing each section of the quilt to hold its own distinct texture and rhythm. The quilting designs include feathers, pearls and swirls, rainbows, clamshells, herringbone, crosshatch, checkerboard, lattice, Nemeshing, pebbles, and matchstick quilting. The larger feather motifs are quilted using Superior Threads Magnifico, while the background work is stitched with Superior Threads Kimono silk for a subtle contrast in sheen and texture.
Along the outer binding, seed beads are hand stitched, and the quilt is finished with a border of cinnamon-brown scalloped graduated beads sewn by hand.
The back of the quilt is finished in a cotton floral rose print. A vintage doily is used as the label, and the hanging sleeve is made from a vintage pillowcase trimmed with a crocheted beaded lace edge.
This quilt is an original design by Martie Frazier-Stern and was entirely free-motion quilted on a stationary machine with dense, even coverage. It is a one-of-a-kind piece, created using a combination of vintage textiles, fine threads, and detailed handwork.
